Houston Stadium in Texas hosted the second Round of 32 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Brazil defeated Japan 2-1 to book their place in the next round.
Brazil started the match on the front foot with an attacking approach, but their early pressure was quickly neutralized as Japan gradually stepped out of their defensive shell. As the game became more balanced, the Samurai Blue created the better chances and eventually broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. Kaishu Sano won possession, drove forward with the ball, and fired a precise shot into the corner beyond Alisson Becker to give Japan a deserved 1-0 lead. Despite falling behind, Carlo Ancelotti's side failed to apply the necessary pressure for an equalizer before halftime and went into the break trailing by a goal.

Brazil came out determined to avoid an early World Cup exit and pushed hard after the restart. They squandered two excellent opportunities in the 52nd and 54th minutes, first through Bruno Guimarães' header and then Casemiro's effort. The Japanese goalkeeper produced a superb save to deny the first chance, while the second was kept out in fortunate fashion.
The equalizer finally arrived in the 56th minute when Casemiro met Gabriel's cross with a powerful header to level the score. Brazil looked much more like themselves after the goal, creating a succession of dangerous attacks through their technical quality and creativity. Two minutes later, Vinícius Júnior dazzled the Japanese defense with a brilliant run, but his effort crashed against the post.

Brazil's intensity gradually faded as the second half wore on, yet they remained the more threatening side and looked the likelier team to find a winner. The match appeared destined for extra time, but Bruno Guimarães, one of Brazil's standout performers, produced a decisive moment deep into stoppage time. His perfectly weighted pass found Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly finished in the sixth minute of added time (90+5) to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory.
With the win, Brazil advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Côte d'Ivoire vs. Norway match at New York/New Jersey Stadium.
