Aston Villa are close to completing the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg. According to David Ornstein, the 20-year-old midfielder was previously on the verge of joining Newcastle United, but ultimately chose Villa, with the club moving quickly following Amadou Onana’s knee injury.
Manzambi is regarded as a versatile and talented midfielder who has already impressed in the Bundesliga and European competitions. He has made 58 senior appearances for Freiburg, recording eight goals and 11 assists, while also delivering strong performances for Switzerland on the international stage.
Villa’s Champions League qualification is believed to have played a key role in convincing the player, with Newcastle unable to offer European football. If completed, the move would provide Villa with quality, depth and tactical flexibility in midfield, while reinforcing the club’s long-term ambition of building a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
