Atlanta's Stadium played host to the second semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where one of international football's fiercest rivalries produced another unforgettable chapter. After a dramatic and hard-fought encounter, Argentina came from behind to defeat England 2-1, booking their place in the World Cup final and ending England's hopes of reaching their first final since 1966.
From the opening whistle, the most noticeable aspect of the first half was the intensity and physical nature of the contest. England took control of possession and dictated the tempo, while Argentina looked to disrupt their opponents’ rhythm through aggressive pressing and tough challenges.
The first real threat came in the 33rd minute when Declan Rice delivered a dangerous cross into the box, which was met by a header from John Stones, but the effort drifted just wide of the post.
Argentina, who focused largely on breaking up England’s play and battling in midfield, finally created their first clear opportunity in the 38th minute. Enzo Fernández tested the England defence with a long-range strike, but it failed to find the target.
In a strange and fiercely contested opening 45 minutes, neither side managed to break the deadlock, and the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

Argentina came out with far greater intent after the break, creating two dangerous chances through Julián Álvarez in the opening minutes of the second half. Both efforts, in the 47th minute, were brilliantly denied by Jordan Pickford.
However, a single defensive lapse proved costly for the Albiceleste. Nicolás Tagliafico's misplaced pass was intercepted by Declan Rice, who quickly found Morgan Rogers. Rogers delivered an excellent cross for Anthony Gordon, who made no mistake in the 55th minute to put England in front.

Trailing by a goal, Argentina had no option but to push forward in search of an equaliser. Lionel Scaloni introduced Nico González to inject fresh energy into the attack, and the substitute almost made an immediate impact. In the 69th minute, his powerful header was spectacularly kept out on the goal line by Pickford.

The pressure continued to mount as Alexis Mac Allister struck the crossbar with a header in the 76th minute. Moments later, he threatened again with another aerial effort, but Pickford was once more equal to the task.
England's goalkeeper produced yet another outstanding save in the 85th minute, tipping Enzo Fernández's fierce drive around the post. But Argentina's persistence finally paid off seconds later when Fernández unleashed another effort that found the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

Deep into stoppage time, Mac Allister rattled the post with a low strike in the second minute of added time. Just moments later, Lionel Messi delivered a superb cross into the box, where Lautaro Martínez finished clinically to complete a dramatic turnaround and seal a 2-1 victory for Argentina.

England threw everything forward in the closing moments, but they were unable to find another equaliser, extending their long wait to reach another World Cup final.

Argentina will now face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, which is scheduled to be played on Sunday, 19 July, at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
