Pogba leaves Monaco after contract termination following one season

Former France midfielder Paul Pogba has parted ways with AS Monaco after the Ligue 1 club terminated his contract, bringing an early end to his return to professional football following a doping suspension.

Paul Pogba has left AS Monaco after the club ended his contract by mutual agreement, just one season after the 2018 World Cup winner joined the Ligue 1 side.

The 33-year-old had been under contract with Monaco until June 2027, but the club confirmed that the agreement was terminated early after the objectives set by both parties were only “partially achieved”.

Pogba made six appearances for Monaco last season, starting just one match and featuring mainly as a substitute.

“Representing this club and the principality was an incredible experience,” Pogba said. “AS Monaco is an incredible club and although I did not play as many games as I had hoped, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear their colours.”

The midfielder joined Monaco last summer after being allowed to return to professional football following a doping ban he received during his time at Juventus.

Pogba had insisted the positive test was the result of an unintentional mistake. His four-year suspension was later reduced to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, allowing him to resume his career in March 2025.

According to BBC Sport, Pogba has attracted interest from Major League Soccer clubs, with DC United and Inter Miami among the teams previously linked with a move for the former Manchester United player.

However, his future could be affected by a hamstring injury suffered during Monaco’s pre-season training camp in England last week, which may delay any potential transfer.

Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro said the club knew Pogba’s return would be a “major challenge” when he signed.

“While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, it should not overshadow the enthusiasm that surrounded his return to club football, nor the fact that Paul was able to return to the pitch and to professional football during this period,” Scuro said.

“We wish Paul all the very best for the future.”
