Leicester learn points deduction appeal fate with huge ramifications in survival fight

Leicester City’s hopes of overturning a six-point penalty have been dashed, leaving the club perilously close to relegation with just five games remaining in the Championship season.

Leicester City have lost their appeal against the six-point deduction imposed in February for breaching financial rules.

The Foxes were initially charged last year for violating the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules during the 2023–24 Championship season. An independent commission confirmed the penalty earlier this year, dropping Leicester from 17th to 20th in the table after losing six points.

Since then, Leicester has fallen into the relegation zone and sits just one point from safety with five games remaining, while Portsmouth, the team directly above them, has played one game fewer.

The club had previously described the punishment as “disproportionate” and launched an appeal, but it was unsuccessful.

In a statement, the club said: "With the matter now at an end and five games of the season remaining, everyone at the club is fully focused on the matches in front of us and on shaping the outcome of our season through our results on the pitch. We know this has been a challenging period, and we thank our supporters for the backing they continue to give the team."

Leicester missed a crucial opportunity to escape the relegation zone on Monday, drawing 1–1 against bottom club Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Manager Gary Rowett expressed his frustration, saying:

"We knew it was a game that we had to win… We’ve created lots of chances and had plenty of the ball, but we need extra quality in the final moments to convert opportunities into goals."

Leicester now faces a real risk of relegation to League One for only the second time in their history.
