Lazio have officially confirmed the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as the club’s new head coach following the departure of Maurizio Sarri.
The Biancocelesti endured a difficult campaign last season, marked by ongoing tensions between Sarri and club president Claudio Lotito. After months of speculation, both parties agreed to part ways, bringing Sarri’s tenure in the Italian capital to an end.
Gattuso had already begun working behind the scenes at Formello several weeks ago, collaborating with Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani on preparations for the upcoming season. However, Lazio only made the appointment official on Tuesday through a statement on the club’s website.
“SS Lazio announces the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of the first team. The club extends a warm welcome to its new manager and believes his experience, professionalism, and determination will play a key role in achieving the club’s sporting ambitions.”
Although Lazio did not reveal the financial details of the agreement, reports suggest Gattuso has signed a one-year contract with an option to extend for an additional season. The former Italian international is also expected to earn around €1.5 million per year.
Gattuso enjoyed an illustrious playing career, winning two UEFA Champions League titles with AC Milan and helping Italy lift the 2006 FIFA World Cup. His reputation as one of football’s most passionate and determined midfielders made him a fan favorite throughout his career.
As a manager, however, his journey has produced mixed results. The 48-year-old has coached several clubs across Europe, including AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, and Marseille. His most notable achievement on the touchline remains Napoli’s Coppa Italia triumph in 2020.
Gattuso now faces a significant challenge at Lazio, where financial limitations and high expectations will test his ability to rebuild the squad and guide the club back toward domestic and European success.
