Cristiano Ronaldo faces suspension after leaving Portugal’s camp

Cristiano Ronaldo could face a lengthy suspension after reportedly leaving Portugal’s training camp following a dispute over his playing time.

The football world was left stunned following Portugal’s international victory over Norway. Despite spending much of the second half warming up on the sidelines, Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the bench and did not feature at all, reportedly leaving the Portuguese captain deeply frustrated.

Hours after the match, the tension appeared to reach a breaking point as the 41-year-old forward packed his belongings and left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen. His departure came before the team’s next fixture against Denmark, turning what initially seemed to be a tactical disagreement into a potentially serious disciplinary matter.

Ronaldo’s decision to leave the squad reportedly followed a private conversation in which, according to his account, the head coach failed to honor a verbal promise concerning his playing time and the subsequent public explanation of the situation. What began as an apparent internal disagreement soon developed into a matter with possible disciplinary consequences for Portuguese football’s governing body.

The FPF activates disciplinary procedures

According to reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, as well as international media organizations including The Mirror and ESPN, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo while investigating the circumstances surrounding his unauthorized departure.

Article 160 of the FPF Disciplinary Regulations, which addresses unjustified absence from or abandonment of the national team, provides for suspension periods ranging from one to six months. The regulations also allow for additional financial penalties of between €500 and €1,020.

If the investigation results in the minimum one-month suspension, the Al Nassr forward would miss next month’s FIFA international fixtures against Denmark and Wales. However, should the Disciplinary Council impose the maximum six-month ban, Ronaldo could be ruled out of the Nations League quarter-finals scheduled for March.

Ronaldo accepts responsibility and issues an apology

Following his departure, Cristiano Ronaldo publicly apologized to his national teammates and Portuguese supporters for the way he handled the situation. The forward accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged that the rules should apply equally to every player.

Ronaldo also emphasized that his position as national team captain should be considered an aggravating factor rather than an excuse for his behavior. He stated that he was prepared to accept whatever disciplinary consequences the federation deemed appropriate.

Despite the controversy, the veteran striker ruled out retiring from international football and reaffirmed his intention to continue representing Portugal once the matter is resolved.

Meanwhile, head coach Jorge Jesus has attempted to ease tensions through his public comments, expressing respect for the work carried out within the dressing room and suggesting that Ronaldo could potentially return to the squad in the future.

Nevertheless, conflicting accounts of the private conversation between the player and the coach continue to fuel uncertainty surrounding the future of Ronaldo’s relationship with the Portuguese national team, widely known as the Seleção das Quinas.
