José Mourinho will return to the Real Madrid dugout if Florentino Pérez is re-elected as club president this weekend, Pérez confirmed on Wednesday during his campaign for another term at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Facing renewable energy entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme in Madrid’s first contested presidential election in two decades, Pérez revealed his managerial choice through a social media video featuring Mourinho delivering a single-word response: “Yes!”
The announcement was accompanied by the campaign slogan “So MOUch history to be made”, a clear reference to the Portuguese coach, who led Madrid to a then-record 100-point La Liga title-winning campaign in 2011-12.
Pérez’s decision comes after a disappointing season for Madrid, who finished behind Barcelona in the league for a second consecutive year. The 15-time European champions have also suffered back-to-back Champions League quarter-final exits, prompting Pérez to call elections amid growing pressure over the club’s lack of major trophies.
The timing of the announcement added another layer to the election battle. While Pérez was unveiling Mourinho, challenger Riquelme was appearing on Spanish television programme El Hormiguero, where he outlined an ambitious sporting project. Riquelme said he would seek to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri and striker Erling Haaland if elected, while appointing club legend Raúl as sporting director.
Mourinho’s coaching career since leaving Chelsea has delivered mixed results. The former Madrid boss won the Europa League and League Cup with Manchester United before guiding Roma to UEFA Europa Conference League success. He has also managed Tottenham Hotspur, Fenerbahce and Benfica, where he remains under contract until June 2027 despite previously revealing the club had offered him a contract extension.
Although some observers argue modern football has moved beyond Mourinho’s pragmatic approach, Pérez appears convinced the veteran coach can restore discipline, competitiveness and winning mentality to a squad that includes Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham.
