UEFA has announced that the Finalissima match between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled.
The game was originally scheduled to take place on 27 March in Qatar, bringing together the winners of UEFA EURO 2024, Spain, and the champions of Copa América 2024, Argentina. However, UEFA confirmed that due to the current political situation in the region, the match cannot be played in Qatar as planned.
UEFA said it explored several alternative options to keep the match on the schedule, including hosting the game at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid or playing it over two legs between Madrid and Buenos Aires. However, these proposals were not accepted by the Argentine Football Association.
Another proposal to move the match to a neutral venue in Europe on either 27 or 30 March was also rejected. Argentina suggested playing the game after the next World Cup, but Spain did not have an available date.
As a result, UEFA confirmed that this edition of the Finalissima has been officially cancelled.
The Finalissima is a match played between the European champions and the South American champions. Argentina won the first edition in 2022, beating Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.
